Coco + Perlite 50/50 — Self-Watering Mix · 5 L

My two-ingredient mix, prepared for your self-watering setup.

A loose blend of 50% buffered coco coir and 50% perlite by volume. The coco holds moisture around the roots, while the generous perlite content helps keep the mix open. This is the ratio I use when a reservoir supplies the water.

Choose 50/50 if…

You grow in a self-watering pot or a compatible wick-and-reservoir system and want a ready-mixed version of my recipe. Follow your pot’s reservoir and wick instructions, and check that moisture reaches the root zone. More perlite does not make a plant immune to overwatering.

Using a regular pot with drainage? My 70/30 blend offers more moisture storage between waterings.

Personally prepared by me

Each bag is mixed and packed to order. I rinse the coco coir by hand before mixing it with perlite. You get my coco + perlite recipe, already mixed and supplied slightly moist, ready for potting.

The mix behind my plant collection

I use coco coir and perlite for almost all the plants I grow at home. I’ve had success with Alocasias, Calatheas, Anthuriums, amaryllis and orchids, adapting the ratio and watering to each setup.

This is a versatile growing medium, but it isn’t one watering routine for every plant. Match your pot, light and moisture levels to the species. Orchids vary widely in their root and airflow needs; this fine mix is not a direct substitute for orchid bark in every setup.

Don’t forget to feed

Coco + perlite is a growing medium, not a complete fertilizer. Use a complete fertilizer formulated for coco, including the calcium, magnesium and micronutrients your plants need. Follow the fertilizer label and adjust feeding to your water and growing conditions. Buffering does not replace ongoing nutrition.
